Here around Nashville everyone has about quit fishing it seems. Reports always get scarce this time of year. I have always found that if you wait to hear about it you've missed it anyway so I go every chance I can. This time of year is some mighty good fishing! Go Get Em!

King, Last time out we killed them. That was 2 weeks ago. They are getting some big shoulders this time of year. Should be spoon jigging time soon. Can't wait! Donn

  3. 11/1/2001 6:53:00 PM KingCrappie from TENNESSEE says Spoon Jigging
Sand Man I never tried jigging spoons for crappie. I have caught one or two in the summer jigging for walleye at night under the lights by accident. Is that a winter tactic?

  4. 11/1/2001 8:38:00 PM Pops from MISSISSIPPI says Fall Fishing
I agree with King Crappie. In the state of Mississippi, everyone starts hunting with the opening of dove season and never looks back. I have been catching very nice crappie to 2 lb. on a regular basis by fishing submerged tops with jigs. Depth doesn't seem to really matter, 5 ft. to 12 ft., with the water level constantly dropping. Some of the fish I catch have 3 in. shad in their gut.

The Corps starts fall pull down on the major lakes (Sardis, Enid, Grenada) in September and the crappie seem to bunch up on almost any structure. A lot of people catch fish trolling, but I got to feel the bump!

    Good fishing.

  6. 11/4/2001 6:24:00 AM BigAl from GEORGIA says Georgia Crappie Fishing
I have been out 4 time in the past two weeks and have had great catches. We have caught 8 fish 2lb or over. I also fishing in brush 10 to 15ft deep with minnows.

  7. 11/4/2001 6:10:00 PM Sand Man from GEORGIA says King-Pops & Oconee report
    King,

Most people have hit the deer woods by now in GA also. Only the diehards are still fishing for crappie. Its nice to have the lake pretty much to yourself. Although there were some jet skis out. Crazy people! Water temp was 68-70.

Spoon jigging is a smorgasbord of catching, not just crappie. We catch hybrid, whites, stripers, cats, lm, crappie The crappie we catch are usually bigger than the average fish. Normally not less than a pound. I use a 1/4oz. Nebco spoon with a hammered finish on one side a lot.

Went to Oconee Sat. and didn't do very well until we figured out that the crappie did not want the jig to move at all. Who of the 3 of us got their jig down first would catch a 1-2# crappie at around 5'. After that we would catch smaller fish until they got to just bigger than hand size. Which is the size one of the guys I fish wth likes to eat. So we kept some of them too. We would have to go to 15' to keep catching fish. But for the most part, they were smaller fish. We would move to the next trre a repeat the process. The 3 of us all ended up with our limits. Probably had 20-25over 1# and maybe2-3 close to 2#. Saw an article in the GON about a guy that still shoots docks this time of year. Tought that was over now. I'll have to try next time out.

Pops, Saw some 3-4" shad floating near the dam of the lake we were fishing. They all had been mauled by some kind of fish. Kept seeing schooling fish the whole time we were fishing near the dam. They didn't stay up too long. I assume the were whites, hybrids, or stripes. We were tempted to go try them, but stuck with what we were doing.

Got a cold front coming through tomorrow, hopefully that will push them deeper and concentrate them.

    Donn

I wish I could get a hold of some of those great big Georgia deer racks, I would sink them like cedars trees and catch me some slab crappie off of them year round! lol! Go Git Em" KingCrappie

  10. 1/8/2002 2:56:00 PM Louis from GEORGIA says Fishing in Boathouses
I'm to be retiring to the south in the next year or so with my spouse, and I'd like to know of good lakes for crappie and other species that have enclosed boathouses. My fond memories are of Grand Lake of the Cherokees in Oklahoma (back in the 50's) which was an excellent fishing place. It had (has) boathouses, many attached in a row, which made for a kind of community of anglers. Most of it at the time was minnow fishing, tightline in about 30 feet of water. Unfortunately, Grand Lake is in a cold weather area with unwanted icy roads. Can anyone recommend a lake (I've thought about the Oconee/Sinclair lakes and also wonder about Lanier) that would present a good potential during the winter months (we plan to be in Canada during the summers)? Any viewpoints would be welcome. Louis
