SUBJECT: # 46: Baiting a brush pile

Submitted by Wedge from TEXAS on 9/12/1999 10:09:00 PM

I'm planning a night fishing trip in about 2 weeks. I've already located a couple of brush piles in 15 and 25 feet close to creek channels, that I think are in strategic spots. Is there a way I can bait these holes before my trip? It seems like I heard about dry dog food mentioned in a magazine somewhere. What to use? How soon to bait before fishing? Thanks!

Hey Wedge, the first rule is to try and keep it off the bottom. You can do this by tying a couple of gal.jugs of dry dod food to a stump or tree or bring a piece of brush weighted on the bottom with the food tied in the top and drop it on the hole. The reason being is that catfish will invade the area, running off the crappie and eating your bait. Make 4 small holes in the jugs. This keeps the bait on the hole longer and keeps turtles and catfish from eating it all. Remember, the bait is for small minnows and shad, not the crappie itself. Bait the hole at least one weeks before fishing. This gives the minnows time to move in and the crappie to find them. Good Luck, RDL
