SUBJECT: # 661: Jigs

Submitted by Jack from ALABAMA on 9/5/2004 10:12:00 PM

How does one fish with a jig? I've always used minnows but people are always talking about jigs and I don't even know how to fish with them.

Howdy Jack: I saw your question about jigs and maybe I can help. First of all, where do you fish and what type of water are you fishing? Is is deep, clear, stained; Lake or creek; I assume you are from Alabama and fish the local lakes. Do you fish brushpiles, rock piles, or bridge pilings? Now that is out of the way, let me tell you where and how I fish jigs. I'm from Texas and fish Sam Rayburn and Conroe. I only fish jigs. I have a 5ft. medium action graphite rod, closed faced spinning reel (ultralite) spooled with Stren Super Braid; 6# diameter and 20# test. This a great rig and the line will keep you from losing jigs and fish. E-mail me and I will try to get you started. Jigs are great fun and if you have the patience and want to learn I'll do what I can.

Jack, I fish for crappie a good bit in the winter on Lake Mitchell with jigs. This time of year we look for submerged timber in 20 to 30 feet of water. We generally back off the structure far enough to fish it from the bank all the way out to the top in the deepest water. We fish 1/8 oz jigs with tube skirts on spinning outfits with 6# line. My brother in law has had good success with power pro braided line also, but I prefer BPS Mr Crappie or Stren either in Hi-Vis Yellow. Basically you cast into the top and try to keep the jig as deep as possible and in contact with the structure as much as possible. Sometimes it will be just a "knock" on the jig, other times they will just load up the line. If they are really bitting it's so much fun! Clear to lite stained water is best. The colder and nastier the day the better for the bite! I've been some days when it has been 20 degrees and spitting sleet and have had my best catches. The new little chemical reaction handwarmers can be life savers. I've also invested in a small coleman heater that is flameless and can be taken along it the boat. I hope this helps!
