    Powerpole mounting?

Rated:

I am thinking about getting a powerpole and was wondering all the boats that I have seen with just one all have them mounted on the driver side. I'm wondering would it be better if you mounted it on the passenger side for weight dispersement reasons? I'm no genius just a gudun but would this not make more sense?

I believe it is a from TheAmBASSador  4/22/2012 9:56:20 PM
visability issue. If unit is mounted on the passenger rear it might block the visability of a boat on that side. Just my 2.5 cents worth.

I have mine mounted on the passenger side. from Harumph #11038 #11038  4/23/2012 8:14:34 AM
Mainly because when I have my non-boater with me we generally fish right to left which keeps it out of his back-swing.

That is my .005 cents worth.

I also went with the 6' version which knocks off about a foot from the top of the pole. This allows me to back the boat under the garage door without having to deploy/lower the powerpole.

Look at the Talon from fishintechnician #13154 #13154  4/24/2012 1:01:48 PM
First off you definaftely want the eight foot version, which mean you can anchor in 7.something of water... My Talon has performed flawlessly, it's much easier to install, no hydraulic pumps etc... I installed mine by myself in 30 minutes... Its installed on the passenger side without any problems. Install it on the side that suits you best you. FYI isn't power pole coming out with a ten foot version? Anyway every time I use it I wish I had two, but I don't use it enough to justify getting another one. If you only have one you still have to use the trolling motor to keep from spinning around, which is better than worrying about the back of the boat but not as good as two. One more thing I didn't plan on needing another cranking battery but now I have two cranking batteries and no room in my back compartment for anything if I had bought the power pole I would not have been able to add another battery.

I went with the power pole. I looked strongly at the talon but decided on the pole due to going under/thru pipes and bridges. And that's a whole lota electronics in the talon whereas the pole is a pump and switch. But I'm sure both work great. I was more so wondering about why mounting on the driver side and not passenger side.

Talon VS Powerpole from Harumph #11038 #11038  4/25/2012 8:33:37 AM
The major reason I went with the Powerpole is the fact that when you engage the PowerPole the top drops down.

As jwalll81 noted it is very useful for when you are going under anything that just clears the motor. Bridges, Pipes, Trees.

Also the reason I went with the 6' version is the fact that the 6' version knocked off 12" from the top of the unit. That put the top of the Powerpole just under the top of my motor when I have the motor locked down on the transom for travel.

This is very nice because when I get home I can simply back into the garage with about 1.5" clearance. Had I gone with the 8' version I would have get out, take the cover off the Powerpole, and drop it down a bit to clear the top of the garage door.

Then I would have to jump out and lift the unit so it wouldn't be sticking out the back and possibly get damaged on the back wall of the garage.

If I had the Talon I would have to park the boat outside all the time.

Maybe the Talon has some type of hinge option where you can break it down to go under stuff? Not sure and maybe one of our Talon owners can chime in on that.

The main point: Clearance is the main issue for me. If clearance is not an issue for you then get the longest you can buy.

Anchor from Cougarcat  4/25/2012 1:32:49 PM
If I throw an anchor at the front and rear don't i get the same thing and no clearance issues?

   True cougarcat from jwall81 #18851  4/25/2012 4:57:12 PM
However the only thing you would need then would be clearance from the doc to go fishing again due to lower back problems ;-)

While that be true Cougarcat I offer the following from Harumph #11038 #11038  4/26/2012 7:31:08 AM
Just this past week while fishing I was moving into the back of a narrow cove with a strong breeze pushing me to the back.

Was looking for bedding fish.

Water was 6' then down to 2' and very clear. There were logs crisscrossed towards the back.

While trying not to tap the TM and spook fish I drifted towards the back of the cut.

Coming up to a log in front of me I see a fish directly behind the cross point of the logs in front of me.

Before the PowerPole I would just let the TM touch the log and stop the boat praying that the fish was not spooked.

Throw an anchor? Would have to be pretty darn fast to get to the back of the boat and quietly drop and anchor (If you had it ready)....

So I just moved my left foot do the down button on the PowerPole. It secured the boat with the TM 3' from the log.

I dropped a bait on the fish and pulled out a 4lb LM. Thanked her for fun battle and released her back to the water.

I think had I not had the PowerPole I would have not caught that fish.

It is a tool. It can be a great tool. Will other things work? Sure...

I then hit the up button with my foot again and immediately reverse the TM to back out of the spot.

No muss no fuss. No muddy anchor pulled into the boat and onto the carpet. Nothing possibly scratching the side of my new rig. No wet rope to throw into a compartment in the boat and worry about drying later.

I just got this PowerPole with my new boat. Heck, I didn't think I would have much use for it but figured I would get it while I could finance it into the purchase price.

In just 4-5 trips doing the break-in.. I don't think I will ever purchase another bass boat without some type of shallow anchor system.

If you fish in both dirctions it won't matter. from fishintechnician #13154 #13154  4/26/2012 3:33:06 PM
You can adjust things in your compartments to redistribute weight. Some guys only fish from a certain side of the boat and don't want to inconvenience their partner. I fish from both directions and I don't set of my boat with a partner in mind I set it up for the owner.

it's a matter of preference from MikeF  4/30/2012 8:19:05 AM
I'm a right hand caster and like to fish from the right side of the boat. If I cast from the back of the boat I like the pole right next to me. I find having it closer makes it less of an issue.

   Probably... from Dan A #10984  5/24/2012 7:29:41 PM
has more to do with boats with boarding ladders. I mounted mine on the driver's side because I have a factory installed boarding ladder on the passenger side... Dan
