SUBJECT: # 41: Trout Fishing in Arkansas - What Lures & Baits Etc do I need?

Submitted by RedFishOne from TEXAS on 3/2/2000 5:46:00 PM

Man will this be unfamiliar territory!!

I want to stock a small tackle system with stuff to catch trout below the...forgive me...I can never remember...South Fork? Below a dam there somewhere. I'm fishing in a friendly tournament there in April and I'm totally green. Please email or post any links or information about stuff I should take with me.

I'm starting with several Rooster Tails, some small jigs and grubs (I use for white bass), and some small 2" Rapala's and Yo Zuri's. I know there is tons of stuff I'm leaving out. Power Bait? Corn? The "Marshmallow" technique?

If noone helps, I guess I'm going to hit them with Firetiger Bass Assassins and Top Dogs!! hehehe...thanks guys and gals.

  2. 3/10/2000 1:14:00 PM JeffJ from TEXAS says Blue Fox Vibrax spinner, size no.2, GOLD...
That's sound advice from Swampy's #2 post on thread #10 on this board. Scroll down some and check out some of the advice.

I went to MN last year and caught several rainbow's using some generic inline spinners they had at a local bait shop.

I tried using the flies under a clear, 1/2 filled bobber but I don't think the conditions were right for that where I was fishing.

    Jeff

Good luck and let us know how you did when you get back.

If it were me fishing a unknow lake for trout, I would take my fly rod along! Sinking line, regular mono for a leader and tippit, and my good ole' green marabou nymph, tipped w/ a maggot or small chunk or worm! about 1/2" long is all. I'd wind drift that fly or slowwwwwwwly troll it. Read lower to c what alse u can find. The small spinners also work well. 1st of april those rainbows will be in spawn! should be interesting! maybe salmon eggs?? g/l
  4. 3/21/2000 12:04:00 PM Steven Miller from MISSOURI says Might try this
I trout fish in a state park in Missouri and I use a Rebel minnow immitation lure, it is the smallest one they make and they are hard to find, it is the f49 model i belive, the Rebel seems to work better for me than the Rapala, get a blue back for sunny days, a black back for all around fishing conditions, and a gold bottom one for low light conditions, this is the only technique I use for trout it is easy and I can usually out fish anyone around on them. The only place I know to get them is Bass Pro and at www.lurenet.com, Good luck in your tourny.

I also would suggest a flyrod. But if I were going to use a lure, I would use the rebel Crawdad lure in the smallest size I could find. get 3 different colors and toss it up stream. I always use split shot to get down where the fish are in the white.

I personally prefer a flyrod though. I also use crayfish immitations with it as well.

  6. 12/8/2000 1:55:00 PM Texas Mike from LOUISIANA says Arkansas Trout
Ive fished the white river in northern ARK, and I was green to trout fishing at the time. But anywhere i go i always try to match the baits that are in the waters. I went the last couple of days of Feb & the first few days of Mar a few years ago, boy was it cold. Anyway I looked in the water and saw a lot of small shad about 2" long. Well i went to Wal-Mart and picked up some small Mepps spinners that were grey and white and seemed to cast a rainbow color if the sun hit them just right. They were just the length of the shad in the river. I took a hand full and went to the river, boy did i have a blast. I couldent keep the trout off that lure. I caught rainbows, browns, and even a few cutthrout trout. It was awsome. I was catching 30, 40, 50, trout a day, no joke. Most were in the pound to three pound range. I did have the occansional 4, and even a few in the 5 pound range. I also found that trout are alot like black bass as far as the places they like to hide out in. They like to stay by stumps, rocks,in shadows, dropoffs, etc. The biggest rainbow i caught(lost) was when i was fishing below a place where there was a small drop off, I cast up river and was pulling the spinner just a little faster then the current was going, and let the spinner go down the little water fall and into the pool it spilled into as to make it look natural. 2 seconds and WHAM, Fish on. On 4 pound test it was a fight. At first i thought it might be a gar, but after what seemed like 20 min (probally really 3) i got the fish close enough to see (it was right at dark) and grab. It came up and turned on its side and i was shocked to see that it was a rainbow that looked the size of the 10 pound bass i have on my wall.I Freaked. Trying to hurry, i grabbed at the fish instead of taking the few seconds to get my net, and as soon as i touched the lip, "splash" it was gone. I almost cryed. I was fishing by Gastons Resort on the White River. The first three or four miles of the river behind the dam (i think its bull sholes dam) were the best for me. I hired a guide the last day i was there and we used dead shad, wax worms, salmon eggs and corn. He caught 2 and i caught 3 trout. Needless to say i should have never hired a guide. That Mepps Spinner was all i needed. But that was my experience. Perhaps it was beginners luck. I dont know. Well i hope i have helped in some way. Good Luck on your trip. Texas Mike PS E-mail me and let me know how you did. michealsamsel@hotmail.com
