SUBJECT: # 99: Confused With Wader Types

Submitted by Roy W. from FLORIDA on 8/10/2001 4:20:00 PM

In retirement I'm planning on spending some time in the Rockies and Canada trout fishing and am confused as to the type of waders to purchase. Originally I thought I wanted the neoprene type waders, but when I watch the fishing shows from Canada and Alaska, everyone is wearing some type of rubber/canvas with a belt around their waist. Which type is best???? Also stocking foot with wading shoes or boot type????? Thanks in advance.

Have never fished in Canada. However if you are gonna' do some hiking you better get some stocking foot waders Neoprene will keep you warmer if the weather is cold. A breatheable wader such as gore-tex or horca-tex is great for warm weather. Keep your feet warm. That is your decision. Call your guide and ask him these questions. He is best qualified. If you are going on your own: Do more research. It pays to get a guide.

In most places you can easily get by with 3mm Neoprene. You can purchase 5mm but make sure you really need it or you will be sweatin down there big time. How far north are you going? Stocking foot waders with wading shoes are by far the most comfortable and less cumbersome. The key to keep in mind is do you plan on wading in muck or on rocks? Felt wading shoes are for streams where they keep you from slidding off the mossy rocks. You also might wanna get a wading staff to help you along until you feel comfortable with wading.I also strongly recommend you purchase those pull tab inflatable suspenders in case you fall in and can't get out.I find that Cabelas really has the best in waders and check out there clearance spot "Bargain Cave" on their website, you can find some killer deals there. The built in boot design is ok but they can make you feel really clumsy;the upside to them is they tend to be more affordable.Keep this in mind when buying waders : you will be wearing them to keep water out and heat/dryness in,and the last thing you want on your vacation is memories of waders that failed you and you were cold and wet while fishing.Go and spend the money and you won't be sorry.
