SUBJECT: # 25: sussquehanna river walleye fishing

Submitted by mark from PENNSYLVANIA on 8/30/1999 11:31:00 AM

Hi Need info on areas to fish for walleyes in river. Thanks Mark

  1. 10/25/1999 12:55:00 AM Lj from WISCONSIN says I use to live in PA
I was born and raised in a small town in the Northeast part of PA that sat right along the Susquehanna River. Back in the 70's and 80's you were lucky to catch a walleye after a long day's fishing. Just recently I went back for a vacation and had no problems catching 4 in a few hours. The hot lure I found when I was back home was the Rebel Crayfish. Didn't matter what color, smallmouth and walleye both were loving those lures. My dad even caught a nice Channel Cat on one that day. The Susquehanna has really changed for the better in the last 15 years. Wish I was living back there just so I could enjoy it! To answer your question however, I only fished the Northeast near Lacyville, Meshoppen, and Mehoopany. Really good fishing in between the towns of Lacyville and Meshoppen. I can't tell you anything else but making a day trip up there sometime is sure worth the time spent. Good Fishing.

I just started fishing for smallmouth and walleye on the susqy and a lake near Hanover Pa. I can never remember the name of the lake, but it's in Codorus State Park. The lake has walleye, and I caught in the late fall and before ice-out in the winter months by verticle jigging around the bridges and along the channel edges. The fish avg. about 12-15", but get bigger every year. The fish on the susquehanna are far easier to catch, and average slightly larger, to 20". These fish I catch mostly on grubs, but catch many on suspending minnow plugs and diving plugs as well. I see some people using minnows, but I never found that to be necessary. I'd be glad to take you to the river sometime, as I don't have many people to fish with since my son moved out of the house to start living on his own. I have a little 14' jon boat with 9.9 that is perfect for the susqy. and it's rock strewn bottom. I usually fish long hours, and am a bit of a hard core fisherman. I divide my time between freshwater (spring and fall/winter) and saltwater (summers.) I now starting to switch off from saltwater, and geting ready to do some walleye and smallie fishing this week. I plan to go thur. to Safe Harbor, and on sat. to Lewes Delaware for trout and stripers. I can give you tons of info, and put you right on fish, but it would take to much typing, which I'm not good at. You can call me if you like, or meet me for some fishing. Email me for a phone number, to chat, or to set up a trip. I spent hours/days searching out the ramps, where to fish and ordered a lot of info from Pa. DNR. I can save you a lot of time and money, and get you started out right. I have area's that are almost guaranteed to produce. Let me know, Brad.

hello, I live in sunbury pa, I fish the susquehanna below and above the fabridam. there are lots of good spots all over the area, but the pp@l plant has a water drainage system that flows into the river, it is a great spot during the colder months for Walley. Hope this helps you a little, Scott
