SUBJECT: # 87: Walleye in Wherspan lake (omaha)

Submitted by Moose from NEBRASKA on 7/9/2000 1:00:00 PM

Help! I have been hitting this lake hard for walleye for about 2 months now without a single one! (catch a lot of fish, just no walleye!) the people I have talked with on the lake say they generally only catch them by mistake when bass fishing...but this can't be the only way! they have dumped over 9,000,000 walleye in this lake since 1990, there have to be some left. any info on walleye fishing in the omaha area would be appreciated, thank you

  1. 7/9/2000 11:18:00 PM Team9nine from INDIANA says Two things to try
First, I would contact the regional DNR/fisheries biologist for the area. Phone or e-mail a message to him asking about recent creel surveys or shocking results for the lake. Ask him about the status of the walleye population in the lake. Here in Indiana they don't continue stockings on the level you mention without positive follow-up studies to support the effort. Second, since most of these walleyes you mentioned being caught are accidental, most bass fishermen will be willing to give you information about general area where caught and type of bait or depth. I'm always asking people (esp. bass guys) I run into around here if they've ever caught any of the walleye. Keep a few notes of every person who gives you info. and put in a file. After awhile you should start to see a pattern emerge, either section of lake or type of bait, day vs. night, etc. About 4 or 5 of us here in Indiana just started an online effort for a particular lake we are all trying to figure the walleye out on. Every time we take a trip whether successful or not (most not) we mention where we tried, what we tried, etc. so we can all learn and eliminate things quickly. Might see if there is a local fishing board in your area that posts such things. Keep up the effort. That first 'eye from that lake, no matter what size, will be very special.
